Everyone deserves to work in a workplace that’s free of incivility and harassment. Unfortunately, many of us still experience, observe, or hear of inappropriate employee behavior that runs counter to a positive workplace culture. These behaviors can include insensitive or rude comments, offensive jokes, negative stereotypes, gossip, insults or put-downs, ridicule, intimidation, and more. Even when we want to interrupt these behaviors, it can be tough! The situation can occur unexpectedly and often feels awkward and tense, which can cause us to freeze up or struggle with knowing the right thing to say or do in the moment. In those circumstances, it's helpful to think ahead about what you could do and have some ready responses you can use if, and when, you need them. Being a hero isn’t always about those flashy, dramatic moments we see on TV…in the real world, it’s often about the quiet moments of bravery in the office or on a virtual call when someone effectively interrupts bad behavior to demonstrate what creating positive workplace culture is all about. This session focuses on “in the moment”, real-time responses to interrupt the negative workplace behavior and to build each attendee’s agency and confidence in these situations. Managers and employees alike can learn how and when to respond without escalation and with the skill to help foster a workplace culture that works for everyone!
